Home Elevator, Stair Lift, or Platform Lift?
Stairs getting harder, or planning ahead? Here is a plain comparison of the main options for getting between levels at home.
Stair lift
Rides along the staircase with a seated rider. Usually the least construction. Not designed to carry a wheelchair.
Platform lift
Short rise, often garage to house, porch, or deck. Can carry a wheelchair on the platform.
Through-floor lift
Goes through a floor opening between two floors, without a full shaft. Some models carry a wheelchair.
Residential elevator
An enclosed cab in a shaft that can serve multiple floors. The most construction, and the most flexibility.
How to decide
Think about who will ride, mobility equipment, how many levels, available space, and budget. This page is general information, not medical advice. A licensed installer, and if relevant your health care provider or an occupational therapist, can help.
